Adult Instruction
How many lessons would an adult need to take?
There is no minimum or maximum number of driving lessons for an adult. However, an estimation of how many lessons might be needed will be determined after the first drive lesson. Typically, if an adult has driving experience, it may take between 1-3 driving lessons. If an adult does not have driving experience, it may take between 6-12 driving lessons. Time frames are based on the individual's grasp of the behind-the-wheel concepts and fundamentals.
We suggest at least six lessons, those being teenagers moving from their permit to license, for adults with no or limited driving experience.
Can I rent one of the APEX Driving School vehicles for my road test?

*You can always request to use our vehicle for your Road Test through your instructor after taking 4-6 Behind-the-Wheel Lessons. If approved by your instructor the Office Manager will reach out to schedule*

What happens if a student forgets to bring their permit to a lesson?
If a student does not have their valid learner's permit/license at the time of their scheduled driving lesson, they will not be allowed to drive on public roads per state law. However, we offer two options:
-
Parking Lot Lesson: Under the instructor's guidance, the student can still participate in a lesson focused on essential parking skills (such as parallel parking, backing into spaces, and maneuvering in tight areas). This ensures the scheduled time is still valuable for the student's progress.
-
Reschedule with a Fee: If the student prefers to reschedule their lesson instead, a $75 fee will be assessed to cover the instructor's time and scheduling adjustments.
To avoid disruptions, please double-check that you have your permit before each lesson.
Do I need to speak English to take driving lessons?
Yes. For safety and effective communication, all students must be able to understand, read, and speak English. This includes following verbal instructions, reading road signs and driving materials, and responding appropriately during lessons.
The lesson may be canceled or postponed if an instructor determines that a language barrier poses a safety risk or prevents effective instruction. Standard cancellation or no-show fees may apply.
No refunds will be issued if a student cannot continue due to limited English proficiency.

How long does it take to learn how to drive?
Every driver in training is different, but the overall success will depend on a combination of Behind the Wheel sessions and practice outside the sessions. The state of Kentucky requires a minimum of 60 hours of drive time for drivers under the age of 18 before testing for their intermediate license. Our 6-hour curriculum is designed to teach skills that must be implemented over those 60 hours of practice.
Can adults take driving lessons?
Absolutely! Adults need driving lessons, too! Adult student drivers may not have the same opportunities to practice as teens; that's where we can help. After your initial evaluation, we will create a custom plan just for you!
Are driving lessons given during inclement weather?
Lessons are conducted rain or shine. However, we will reschedule lessons if the instructor/office deems the roads to be unsafe due to conditions such as snow, ice, or extreme weather conditions.
